Preamp Pricing guide
The prices for custom preamps vary wildly. Some people want a good tube preamp for a low price. Some people want it fully loaded with all the possible features and esoteric components. Please keep this in mind. The prices below are intended to give you an idea of the price ranges for my preamps as of September, 2010.
Single channel preamps usually run from $600 to $1050. The dual mono units typically fall in the $1150 to $2000 range. The LAmpex goes for $1750 to $2300. Parts costs vary a lot; so do the number of features that people want. The customer can choose whether they want high end parts or not.
The prices will sometimes be higher but rarely lower. Things like suitcase mounting with Aluminum faceplates can push the price up. These prices are for when I supply everything. If you have a 601, I will either customize it for you, or you may trade it in for credit when your unit is finished. I recommend this because you will get to use it while I am building your unit.
$250 credit - This is for a 601 based on the 6267 (EF86) tubes, in good clean condition with all its tubes and:
Including a good 580022 or 17331 Ampex microphone transformer.
Including the small output transformer.
Including a fully working power transformer and choke.
Including a working meter and no damage issues, I.E. broken faceplate.
It does not need to be working well or at all. The customer has to pay to ship it to me, usually around $20 in the lower 48. (I'm in Texas) If the mic transformer is missing: $150 credit. If it has 5879 tubes, that lowers its value by $40. The 600 and the 602 are worth less than the 601 (at least to me,) somewhere around $150 depending on condition.
Backlog: At the time of this writing (Sept 2010,) there is about a 6 - 8 month waiting time for preamp orders. A 33% deposit is req'd when I start the work, with the balance due when the unit is approaching completion. The customer will forfeit the deposit if they do not complete the transaction within 30 days from the time they are notified the unit is ready to ship. I accept Paypal, checks and MO.
My preferred method of payment is PAYPAL. I accept Credit card payments through Paypal. Your credit card info is kept secure because I never have it. This allows me to accept credit cards without the issues of protecting customer information on my server. Checks and money orders via mail are fine too.
