Uploading files requires the use of FTP software. If you don't already have FTP software, I highly recommend using the FireFTP plugin for Firefox. It is simple and free. Available here for Firefox users.
Upload Area Access:
Please
for access to the file upload area. After I have transferred your file to the studio, I will contact you to have you remove the file from the server. I do this so that you know that the file is no longer accessible and if you have any other need for the file (like having a collab partner d/l it) I wouldn't want to delete it before you are ready.
File Formats:
The only acceptable formats for mastering work* are stereo WAV or AIFF files at 16, 24, or 32 bit, and 44.1 - 96kHz. These are large files and I only recommend attempting to upload on a dialup connection if you are comfortable with making multipart Rars.
There should be no clipping and no post mix processing (inc. dithering) There will of course be a variety of effects on individual tracks, but leave the post mix processing to me. If you are using a limiter or any other effects on the stereo master buss in your software - that counts as "post mix processing." In other words: You have, say, 12 various tracks mixed down to a stereo track in your software, where you then have it running through reverb and a limiter. The role and function of the mastering engineer is becoming blurred as technology advances, but if you want me to master your song, please leave the post mix processing to me.
*exception: By popular request I will accept mp3's as source material for (I hate to call it this) mastering. This is a very poor option and I only intend this as a way for indies to improve the quality of a mix, when no wav file exists for whatever reason. These mixes are for internet mp3 distribution and are (IMO) unsuitable for CD pressing.
File compression for wavs:
While it is not necessary to use one of these lossless compression programs, it will save you upload time and assure data integrity for the transfer. If you are not comfortable with using one of these, please at least zip the file before uploading.
I recommend the following for lossless compression: Monkey's Audio (free) Wavpack (free) FLAC (free, cross platform) WinRar (not free)
Use of MP3s:
For performance work and auditioning versions of mixes, mp3s are fine and no further compression is called for. In other words: for quick examples MP3s are fine, but any file used for production work should be a wav.
